Suicide Races
Before a plunge down 210 feet of a 60-degree slope covered with loose, wet sand, riders race their horses 120 yards toward the drop-off. They begin their near-blind descent at a full gallop, an invitation for broken bones and other injuries. Most of the human and horse injuries and deaths occur on this initial stretch down Suicide Hill.
synchronized swimming
Members of the Tualatin Hills Synchro Club use the dry-land training facility before practice in the pool. "It requires a high level of synergy to be successful," says coach Linai Vaz DeNegri "Being upside down, not seeing, not hearing - they really need to have a good feel for each other out there." Led by their national champions Hanna Mittemeyer and Anya Szumowski, the 46 member Tualatin Hills synchronized swim club has been competitive nationally and hope to take that success to the international level. The team will be competing at the U.S. Junior Nationals in Minneapolis, MN this spring. "Our sport gets a bad wrap sometimes," says coach Linai Vaz DeNegri. "I think it is because art is not valued as much in athletics. We have a unique combination of art and athletics here. I like to compare it to figures skating, while upside down while not breathing."
